SAILING CRUISE FOR GOURMETS BY SAINT PETER’S ISLAND:

QUALITY AND AUTHENTICITY: Four full day sailing on different boats, plus a two day cruise, in six calm & friendly days

ANTONELLO CAMBETTA organises
THE COSY SAILING CRUISE aND GOURMET FOOD TEP (Thematic Experiential Path) of
CARLOFORTEXPERIENCES :

THE ISLAND OF ‘ST. PETER (“L’ISOLA DI SAN PIETRO”) AND ITS NAUTICAL TRADITION

At the extreme South Western coast of Sardinia, the ISOLA DI SAN PIETRO, is considered the west most strip of land of Italy and has exercised his incredible charm since very ancient times. The island has always been an important seaport for its geographical position, its safe bays, for its gentle slopes and an abundance of water sources (unlike the neighboring and often arid Sardinia) in the center of the routes of Western Mediterranean. In fact, on the island are still to be found evidences of the passage of Phoenicians and Romans.
But only since ‘700, was the island permanently inhabited by a stable community, coming originally from Genoa. The ancient nautical culture of the settled ligurian colony soon led to Carloforte becoming famous for its shipbuilding and maritime art, strongly distinguished from the rest of Sardinia, characterised by agricultural and pastoral traditions. Carloforte’s “maestri d’ascia” –  ax masters – were considered the best by the famous British Admiral Horatio Nelson, who often landed on the island with his fleet to carry out important work of carpentry.

There were some “Carlofortini” – from Carloforte – among those who devoted themselves to trade, traveling in the Mediterranean, sailing with traditional “vela Latina” – Latin sail – sailing boats. Testimony handed over to the present day is the "Ruggero II" – Roger II -, a "bilancella" boat with  Latin sail, once used for the transport of raw materials from mining.

The island, due to its geographical position, has always been invested by the winds. making it a fantastic sail training range. The dominant wind is the Mistral, from the North West, although in recent years, with climate change, has been noticed a greater presence of the Sirocco, from the South East.

The Island of St. Peter is of ancient volcanic origin, and presents in the North Western side high and steep cliffs and deep narrow inlets, presenting sailors with superlatives scenarios. The bordering coast of the South West of Sardinia, geologically, is one of the oldest rock in Europe. Of considerable charm is the faraglione “The Pan di Zucchero”, one of the geologically oldest cliffs, which unmistakably stands in front of Porto Flavia (ancient point of discharge of mine minerals) South the villages of Nebida and Masua. When the sea is calm, it is very suggestive to spend the night in a boat anchored below the faraglione.

The sailing itineraries to be followed in this part of Sardinia are all different and of considerable charm. If you sail North, passing “Pan di Zucchero”, there is a high and indented coast. Rich in small bays, with no shortage of caves and rocks with strange shapes, one can shore to fantastic,  sandy sea bottom Cala Domestica, with the sea color changing from dark blue to turquoise.
Alternatively, if from Carloforte if you choose to proceed to the South, you sail along the Island of S. Antioco, where also high cliffs alternate bays with very bright sand, meeting the small islands of the Bull and the Cow: “Il Toro” and “La Vacca”. These appear in the middle of the sea, high and steep, a little far from the coast which makes them seem to come out of nothing. This makes them mysterious and fascinating, and if the weather permits, definitely worth exploring one of the two, Toro, where do nest several quite rare species of birds.
You can then continue to navigate to the South, reaching the fantastic dunes of “Porto Pino”.

These re very high dunes of clear sand, that emerge from the beach, hiding behind them a very interesting vegetation, typical of sandy environments. Here, a boat stop is a duty: the sea turns turquoise, and the sand dune is so soft and mealy that plunging rolling down from its peak is fun, to say the least.

These are some of the places that can be visited in comfortable sailing boats (OCEANIS 393), about 39 feet, 12 meters, comfortable and spacious boats of the maker Benatau, with three double cabins, two toilets, a large dinette) with at the helm Antonello Cambedda the skipper of the sailing school NautiVela, with his staff. The program foresees daily sailing, boarding in the morning from the marina of Carloforte, landing in the afternoon in time for a shower at three stars hotel “Paola” and dinner in first rate restaurants on the island. 7-10 participants will be divided in two groups on identical boats cruising together.
If the weather allows, in the programme plan there is a mini cruise for two days, spending the night on the boat, anchored in one of the great bays of the area. In this way you can reach some further destinations, live the magic atmosphere of a night on the boat under the stars, away from polluting noise and lights; participate as real sailors to life on board, from the galley to the kitchen, from navigation to anchorage for the night.

We then spend a day of sailing on “Ruggero II”, the wooden Latin sail “bilancella”, 12 meters long, 5 meters wide, built in 1893 by shipwright Carlofortino Giovanni Biggio. Beautiful and sturdy, it was used for the transportation of mine minerals, shuttling between the South West coast of Sardinia (Buggerru, Porto Flavia, Piscinas) and the island of St. Peter, where there was the only safe port of the area, Carloforte, from which lead and zinc were loaded on ships headed for the continent. After decades of services, Roger II was abandoned. Only in 2004, after a careful work of reconstruction and restoration by Salvatore Luxoro, it is born again in his glory, the symbol of an important cultural heritage. It has participated in several Latin American sailing regatta, winning the national championship in 2005.

The entire pathway that we propose is not a sailing course, but a real and proper experience, where participants are the protagonists of life onboard, and of the conduct of the boat. they will participate actively in the maneuvers, learning and refining their knowledge on sailing. They will visit beautiful places, which, as seen from the sea. appear under a completely new light, giving the feeling of experiencing a true exploration.
Responsible for the sailing is Antonello Cambedda, Carlofortino, professional skipper, and sailing instructor, manager of NautiVela Carloforte sailing. Graduated from the renowned Nautical Institute of Carloforte, a sailor since childhood, after years of participation in sailing regattas on dinghies, cruisers, sailing boats and Latin sails, becomes a federal instructor (the Italian Sailing Federation: F.I.V.) in 1998, and federal race judge in 2008. In 2000 he founds the school of sailing NautiVela and decides to turn sailing into his main occupation.

To participate in this path there is no previous notion on sailing required. The navigation will be conducted in utmost safety, and routes will be selected by the skipper’s unconditional judgement, depending on weather conditions. Being able to swim is a requirement, of course, as swell as being in good physical shape. In addition one should not suffer from seasickness,.or should bring along suitable drugs against sea sickness. Comfortable clothing and sporting boat shoes are recommended, shorts and long shorts, visor cap, wool hat, sweater or pile, jacket and waxed clothes (i.e., waterproof trousers and jacket), sunscreen cream, a bathing suit, a towel. At sea, the weather may change abruptly. In addition, because of the wind, the temperature can cool  down abruptly, so it is highly recommended to always carry along, in a soft bag, a change of clothes, the waxed clothes, and warmer clothing.

The lateen sailed (a vela latina), wooden ship called Ruggero II was created by the hands of master builder Giovanni Biggio in 1893. Beautiful and strong, it was designed to transport minerals from the southwest coast of Sardinia(Buggerru, Porto Flavia, Piscinas) to the Island of San Pietro where the only sheltered port of the area was to be found, that of Carloforte.
From here lead and zinc were loaded onto cargos bound for the continent. The ship remained in service until the first decades of the 1900’s. Rebaptised Buon Cuore (Good Heart), it was used for various purposes (sal transport, fishing, towing), eventually slipping into obscurity. Then, on 2000,
a young man from Carloforte, Salvatore Luxoro, found it in Olbi in a state of complete abandon and decided to restore it. Bit by bit, with the help of an old ship builders and elders of the little town, in 4 years he reconstructed that lost jewel of the local fleet, symbol of an identity that risked being lost.
Th eRuggero II was officially reborn in may 2004 under the aegis of Geo-Mineralogical Historical and Environmental Park of Sardinia whch has made of it a symbol of cultural patrimony, it being the only sail boat of its kind left in the area )three others are to be found in the north of Sardinia).
It has taken part in many lateen sailing races and won the national championship in 2005.
Today the Ruggero II provides a tourist service and is used sor all official functions due to the precious historical load it carries.

A dedicated TEP leader with the help of two instructors will organise, monitor, and control the evolution of the entire path, with plenty of behind curtain support. Two tutors will join the group of seven-ten participants (one tutor for four-six participants) and accompany them all along the TEP, providing conversation in English, information, clarification, relation, contact and understanding with natives, support on all matters including travel, as well movie recording for post-factum appraisal and enjoyment.
